Welcome to Eigaku. This is the first post.
To do anything for the first time, it’s only natural to think, “I must prepare myself for the unexpected.” In this regard, many people will conduct research, observe, and take notes, all in the hope that they will successfully accomplish whatever they are attempting to do for the first time. However, anyone’s “first” attempt at anything can’t always be considered positive: it’s unfamiliar, daunting, and even scary at times. Is this right for me? Can I do correctly? Will I be judged for how I do it?
Those are the thoughts I carry with me today as I begin this “journey”—which certainly sounds more fancy than what it actually is—and conduct research, observe, and take notes. Plus, I can tell the people around me that I’m a blogger. I’d say that’s pretty neat.
As such, I’ll begin with explaining 描く(えがく)。”Eigaku” is the Japanese word that means “to depict.” For example, you can use this word to say that you drew, painted, or sketched something. However, you can also use this word to describe how an novelist “depicts” their story—such as their character’s personality, the storyline, or its themes. Additionally, according to a dictionary’s definition, to “draw” something also contains the meaning associated with “imagining in one’s mind.” It provides the example 「将来の姿を思い浮かべる」which means to “envision the future.”
